THE WORK

Portrait of Mary Thompson

This portrait of Mary Thompson, commissioned by her husband, the Artist Kenneth M. Thompson, portrays the elementary school teacher and competitive dancer, not with her young learners, but on her own, precisely posed, in a striking sequined ballroom gown. The distinct profile and well-defined musculature of the subject add to the strength and power of this most dramatic work. The unveiling of the painting in 2004 at the grand re-opening of Mr. Thompson’s Flatlanders Gallery, was accompanied by a magnificent performance in dance by Mary and her professional partner, Dorian Deaver.
